UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WTAJ) – Steve Jones, also known as the voice of Penn State football and basketball, will celebrate his 30th season calling the Nittany Lions football team.
In 1980 Steve graduated from Penn State University and quickly grabbed a mic to start calling their basketball games before he started calling their football games. He recounts how he witnessed some of the biggest events of his life calling football matches.
“Joe Paterno’s 324th win, his 400th win, his 409th,” Jones said. “You watch the game with Ohio State in 2005 and Tamba Hali knocks Troy Smith over the head, Larry Johnson going over 2,000 yards in a season on a touchdown run.”
Aside from being there for some of the greatest moments in Penn State football history, he’s also been there for some of the worst times for them, including the fallout from the Jerry Sandusky scandal. He also remembers Penn State’s victory over Ohio State in 2016.
Fast forward five years and now current coach James Franklin has Penn State as a top 10 program with college football playoff aspirations. Steve is amazed at how far the Nittany Lions have come.
“They are now at this point where they are formidable almost year after year. Now can you overcome that last great hurdle which is the biggest of all – the last four groups. “
