For Nebraska Cornhuskers football fans, Christmas is coming early, at least in terms of calendar date. The annual date for the Rouge-Blanc football match in the spring is officially set for April 9, 2022.
Nebraska AD Trev Alberts says the Red-White soccer game will be on April 9 in the spring. Earlier, he says, as the program works to replace the artificial surface.

The news came from Husker athletic director Trev Alberts as part of Sports Nightly on the Huskers radio network and reported by Evan Bland of the Omaha World Herald. The start of April date, the oldest for the annual scrum since April 6, 2013, should allow for the complete replacement of the FieldTurf surface which has not been replaced since 2013.
Despite the incredible benefits of natural turf, especially for player health, and competitive financial outlays for seeding, installation, and maintenance, Nebraska has chosen to stick with artificial FieldTurf. Artificial turf has been Tom Osborne Field’s preferred surface at Memorial Stadium since it was first installed in 1999. FieldTurf, the current surface, has an eight to 10 year lifespan and was last replaced in 2013. Due of the COVID-19 pandemic, UNL has chosen to delay the installation for an additional year until 2022.
No official word yet on when tickets go on sale, but 36,406 Nebraska fans attended the spring 2021 game which had limited attendance allowed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The 2019 game, the last to go without a pandemic at the time, had an announced audience of 85,000.
