New generation of American women’s football stars to earn their stripes ahead of 2023 World Cup – The offside rule

Coach Vlatko Andonovski ushers in a new generation of talented youngsters who could replace big name veterans as the USWNT begins tournament preparations with the first of two friendlies against co-hosts Australia on Saturday.

No other country has dominated the Women’s World Cup like the United States. America’s past and present teams have reached the pinnacle of international women’s football four times since the major tournament was established in 1991 – and now the reigning champions are aiming for a third straight title.

We may still be 18 months away from the 2023 World Cup, but preparations for the competition’s qualifiers have already started, with US coach Vlatko Andonovski recently announcing several fresh-faced stars who will join his established veteran players.

The United States Women’s National Team has 22 players. Earlier this month, Andonovski announced his player picks for their scheduled Australian friendlies, which pave the way for the 2023 World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The last time around, the USWNT was contractually barred from allowing new blood to be in the field outside of injury replacements. A disappointing period at the Olympics also forced the presentation of players from the same team in the four friendlies that followed. However, the contract is over and Andonovski has shown his eagerness to display new talent and bring the champions back to the high level they are known for.

Only 10 players from the Olympic team have been selected for Andonovski’s team for Australia. The American coach ushers in a new era of stars with an average age of 26.3 years, four years younger than the Olympic team.

Speaking to the media, Andonovsky said: “We will find out very quickly who is made for the big games under pressure. We have to increase the overall experience of the players, so we have to offer them games like these. We have to put them in harsh environments like these. ”

Fans have yet to witness the level of performance of this new team, but with two meetings scheduled for this Saturday and next Tuesday to close the USWNT 2021 schedule, we’ll find out soon.

Confidence in the selection of Andonovsky’s team is already being felt, as Caesars Sportsbook in New York lists the US as the favorite -137 on the 90-minute silver line, while Australia is the underdog +375. Bettors respect the new faces who have had impressive outings in the national action.

Newcomers combine with the knowledge of veterans

Starting at the back, Bella Bixby and Casey Murphy are the uncapped tag team who will be looking to gain some expertise from Jane Campbell – the OG goalie with seven international caps under her belt. Sofia Huerta returns to defense after a three-year hiatus and could be positioned in the first team if Midge Purce and Crystal Dunn return to their original attacking history.

However, it is the offensive prowess that draws the intrigue the most. Ashley Sanchez was selected for the team after her impressive season with Washington Spirit.

She’s better at things she was good at, like problem-solving under pressure, finding tight spaces, connecting with the frontline, and it shows.,“Andonovski said of the talented 22-year-old, who he believes could be a great attacking midfielder.

Bethany Balcer is another unproven player on the international stage, but her ability to score goals in the NWSL makes her a prospect to watch. Ashley Hatch is this season’s Golden Boot winner, and although she has appeared in two international meetings, she has yet to show her true colors. Morgan Weaver has only scored one goal this season, but Andonovski insisted his ability to open up the opposing defense and put pressure on is remarkable.

Meetings in Australia will be revealing

While the injection of young talent is welcome, Andonovski’s real task will come after the friendlies against Australia and the January camp.

As we move into a new year, the USA coach must decide which new players deserve a position to challenge veteran players who may not make their way to the world cup in 2023 – like Tobin Heath, Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Christen Press, among others.

The team does not rely on the veterans,“Andonovsky said,” and this camp doesn’t mean any of those veterans are out of the picture.

We will see a few more exchanges. But time will tell if anyone from this group will come out and who will be in. “

With an open door, emerging talents have the opportunity to make their mark. The US women’s team is the gold standard in American football – and they’ve won half of the eight World Cups since the competition started in 1991 – so those are big boots to fill. But if there is a moment to argue, it will be against the Australians.
