Love, Gann relishes the opportunity to play, probably, one last game of football

June 24, 2022, Bishop Leblond seniors Julio Gann and Reggie Love will play in what is likely their last career football match on Saturday.

The two will compete in the Missouri 8-Man All-Star Game on Saturday night at Missouri Western State University, a game that will come with plenty of bittersweet.

“Being able to put the pads on one more time and just play with a group of great athletes to improve ourselves. It’s just going to be a fun game and a fun environment overall,” Gann said.

The last time these two entered the field was in November when they faced King City for a District 3 championship. The Golden Eagles fell to the Wildkats in that game by two touchdowns. While the Ganns and Love didn’t get the results they wanted from this contest about seven months ago, taking the court on Saturday night with some of the best talent the state has to offer in 8-man gives them a chance to end their career with a victory.

“It just means a lot,” Love said. “Football has helped me a lot and being able to play once again means so much to me. I’m trying to show what Leblond has taught us. It’s the great coaches we have there, the great guys we have in our bedroom locker they push me to be better they are the reason I am here and I am here to show up for them.

Gann and Love, both of whom will make the All-Stars silver team at 8, will face a familiar friend on the opposite sideline on Saturday. Their head coach Chuck Davis is on the opposing green team’s coaching staff. Davis says he owes a lot to his two seniors for helping build the program as Leblond went from competing 11-8.

“When we started we were 11 football players, 19 kids on the whole roster. For now having a bit more success at the 8-player level. Bigger squad, more numbers and they’ve been able to see this growth with me,” Davis said.

Gann is expected to enroll at Missouri Western this fall as a college student while Love hangs up football cleats to pursue a career as a firefighter.
