SALT LAKE CITY, Utah –BYU Athletics has announced kickoff details for the Cougars’ football game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
BYU is scheduled to play Notre Dame at Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, on Oct. 8.
The game was announced in September 2021.
On Saturday, April 23, the Cougars shared more details about the contest.
The Shamrock Series match will begin at 5:30 p.m. (MDT) and will be broadcast on KSL TV.
BYU opened its 2021 season at Allegiant Stadium with a victory over Arizona.
The Cougars kick off their 2022 schedule on the road against the USF Bulls on September 2.
BYU and Notre Dame
BYU and Notre Dame planned a six-game deal in 2010. At the time of the announcement 11 years ago, the two independent faith-based programs were scheduled to play all six games before the 2020 season.
After 11 years, only two games have been played, including three of the canceled contests. Leaving BYU on hold for a home game against Notre Dame after the first two games played in South Bend.
When BYU and Notre Dame agreed on their six-game series, the Irish did not have a scheduling agreement with the ACC. Since partnering with the ACC for five games a year each year, the Irish have not created openings to schedule BYU.
For a time, there was some doubt as to whether BYU had a remaining contract with Notre Dame or if the Cougars were going to get a payday from the Irish. The past few years have raised optimism that another game will be played.
BYU and Notre Dame have played eight games against each other. The Irish lead the all-time series, 6-2. BYU’s wins came in 1994 and 2004.
