Four football matches to watch this weekend

Kwara United v Rivers United @Kwara Sports Complex 4pm May 1

The question is still who will stop Rivers United’s pursuit of the NPFL title this season? Kwara United will try. The Kwara side have excellent form at home which have won nine out of 12 outings with no defeats.

Kwara United have been in below-average form in their last five matches, in which they have picked up just three points, including two straight draws at Ilorin. Although they scored 17 goals in Ilorin, conceding only five.

Stanley Eguma reiterated that although his side are four points clear at the top of the table, there can be no complacency. “As I will always say, it’s not over yet. The league is a marathon,” Eguma told the NPFL official website. Another road win will bring Rivers United one step closer to the league title.

Everton v Chelsea @Goodison Park at 2pm May 1

Third bottom Everton under a Chelsea legend Frank Lampard takes on top third Chelsea with serious ramifications for the result.

The Toffees have six games to save themselves and home form will be key to that survival.

Lampard’s men did well at Anfield in their last game as Chelsea were lavish against Manchester United Thursday.

Lampard will be without Ben Godfrey but Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be back in the squad despite fitness doubts. Lampard needs a result no matter what because 17th-placed Burnley are out at doomed Watford.

Barcelona v Mallorca @Camp Nou @8pm on May 1

Incredibly, Barcelona have lost their last three home matches. Sevilla moved up to second place on Friday and second place guaranteeing a chance to play in next season’s opening Spanish Super Cup.

Atletico Madrid are also in the hunt for second place as they are only two behind the Catalans in fourth.

Xavi reportedly hosted a barbecue to improve the team’s spirit despite them suffering from serious injuries, especially to Pedri.

Their visitors Mallorca are in relegation danger as they sit in 16th place, just two points clear of 18th-placed Granada, meaning there will be plenty to play for on Sunday.

Although Xavi is confident, Barca have won the last five meetings, scoring 19 goals and conceding just four.
