Football stars Alex Ferguson and Ally McCoist arrive ahead of Walter Smith’s memorial service at Glasgow Cathedral

FOOTBALL stars including Alex Ferguson and Ally McCoist arrived at Glasgow Cathedral ahead of Walter Smith’s memorial service today.

The Ranger legend died last month from an illness. His death caused a huge wave of grief among Rangers fans, with fans rushing to Ibrox Stadium to pay their respects.

Ibrox legend Ally McCoist, above, had a close relationship with Walter Smith calling him a “second father” in an emotional tribute to the gaffer moments after hearing news of his passing.

Other Rangers personalities will be in attendance today, including former defenseman Richard Gough, who captained the team in their iconic nine straight run.

Gough was seen with Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United boss who was “devastated” by Smith’s death. The two have developed a close relationship over the year of playing and working together.

A testament to the respect Walter Smith had in the football world, key figures from Old Firm rivals Celtic will also attend today’s memorial.

Lord Provost of Glasgow Philip Braat was also present today.

He was laid to rest earlier this month in a private family service.

Today’s service will air later on Rangers TV.
