Fewer suspicious football matches reported in 2020, report says


A report published by Stats Perform Integrity and Starlizard Integrity Services reveals that in 2020, 217 football matches were deemed suspicious. This number represents a decrease from 2019. However, the white paper acknowledges that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the global sporting calendar, resulting in fewer matches analyzed.

Statistics effect integrity together with Starlizard Integrity Services published the latest, fourth edition of Report on suspicious betting trends in world football. The report analyzes national and international competitions in more than 100 countries around the world.

The latest report reveals that he analyzed 61,296 games in 2020. These matches were played in 112 different countries on six continents. Overall, the analysis concluded that there was 217 suspicious matches. This number represents only 0.35% of all matches analyzed.

In 2019, when 80,939 matches were analyzed, the report reported 456 as suspect. This represents 0.56% of the matches analyzed. In 2018, that number was even higher when 0.73% of matches analyzed were flagged as suspicious. Now the result of 2020 marks the third year in a row with a decrease in the percentage of suspicious matches.

The lower number is in part due to the cancellation of many games during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it remains comparable to the 62,250 games analyzed two years ago,

Suspicious betting trends in the World Football report

The report reveals that the global COVID-19 pandemic last year had an impact on the number of matches analyzed. It was mainly because many matches were canceled due to pandemic. The percentage of suspicious male and female matches decreases

The report reveals that of the 217 matches reported as suspicious, 48 were friendlies. While in 2019 the percentage of suspicious friendlies was 0.67%, last year it jumped to 1.19%.

On the other hand, the number of suspects youth matches have dropped significantly last year. While in 2017 the number of suspicious youth matches was 62, it fell to 58 in 2018. In addition, in 2019 this number fell to 46, while last year the number of suspicious matches of young people stopped at 16.

Likewise, a breakdown by sex of suspicious persons matches played by women or men also showed a decrease. In 2018, the percentage of suspicious female matches was 0.26%. That number fell to 0.15% in 2019 and last year it hit bottom with 0.03%. When it comes to suspect male matches we see yet another decrease. In 2018, the percentage of suspicious matches among men was 0.62%, while in 2019 it fell to 0.58%. With that in mind, last year this percentage significantly decreased to 0.38%.
