Durga Puja in West Bengal appears to be the new site of a major political battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP, with both parties doing their best to establish their dominance over the biggest festival in the world. State. While TMC plans to organize football matches based on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s now famous political war cry, “Khela Hobe”, the BJP is in talks with some puja committees to take over their organizational responsibilities.
The football matches will be hosted by a group of Durga Puja organizers on September 4th. The women – through their organization “Banglar Dugga” – will organize the football matches in Kolkata, which will also involve teams from several districts of South Bengal.
Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, who is also the chairman of Banglar Dugga, said News18, “Banglar Dugga can do anything and everything. Therefore, we will organize Khela Hobe football matches in which 8 teams will participate. Our Durga can cook, can teach, can kill demons – that’s what we want to show. Our chief minister is also a woman, who defeated demons in this election. So Khela Hobe is a must.
The TMC, buoyed by its resounding victory in the 2021 parliamentary elections, appears to be trying to keep the momentum around the slogan ‘Khela Hobe’ – and what better way than to hang on to the state’s biggest festival.
These football matches will have a new slogan: “Atoot che manobal, Durgader pae football (Our determination is strong, Durga will play football).
The organizers of Durga Puja, however, claimed that they were never as exposed as their male counterparts. Therefore, they decided to launch their own Pujo with Khela Hobe as the theme.
