As the Cal Athletics DEIB bureau chief, Douglas kicked off this new Cal football commentary partnership with the Cal’s Athletic Study Center, led by Dr. Derek Van Rheenen, his broadcast co-host, a professor de Cal and the Cal men’s soccer Hall of Fame Member.

“Prior to this season, Cal’s live stream games for their men’s and women’s football teams were video-only. [without any commentary and announcers] when it is not hosted by the Pac-12 network.

Cal Athletic Director Jim Knowlton said: “It is special to see and hear two members of my manager’s cabinet offer colorful commentary during the game! I am grateful for their initiative to not only see this opportunity, but find a way to fill it with excellence!

“What a wonderful collaboration to have our Director of the Sports Studies Center and the Cal Soccer Hall of Fame member. [Dr. Van Rheenen] and our leader DEIB [a former soccer player in Bermuda] share the game with parents, alumni, fans and the wider Cal community.

“Our coaching teams from both soccer programs are delighted and grateful for this support from Dr. Van Rheenen and Dr. Douglas who will help accelerate our DEIB efforts through an improved video product; a product that will help us better share and celebrate the diversity of our athletes, their backgrounds and the “beautiful game” of football.

The spokesperson said: “Douglas’ commentary has already made a colorful addition at notable moments in the game, including a ‘double nutmeg’ in which Douglas can be heard declaring ‘oh my God!’ Which has grabbed the attention of popular football platform Instagram @overtimefc and a long-range strike from Cal’s Juan Martinez.

“Not only can Bermuda hear a Bermuda accent on this international show, but Dr. Douglas’ live banter often includes references to Bermuda and Bermuda, like his home club, the Dandy Town Hornets, and mentions of Flora Duffy, Cup Match and Bermudian football legends.

In fact, an avid cricketer for Western Stars and Warwick Workmen’s Club while growing up in Bermuda, Douglas admits with a smile that his commentary has a decidedly ‘Cup match commentary’ feel, and his selection of the name ‘La Cal Soccer ‘voice is a tribute to Bermudan commentary legend’ The Voice of Summer ‘, the Honorable CV Jim Woolridge.

“Douglas appreciates the many Bermudians who have made significant contributions to local and international sports broadcasting, including Shaun Goater in football.

“Today at 8 pm Bda / 4 pm PST, Douglas will be providing the play-by-play commentary for Cal’s women’s football game against St. Mary’s. The Golden Bears started the season strong and are unbeaten so far this season [2-0-1], especially after equaling defending national champions Santa Clara University last Sunday and beating Portland on Friday.
