Climate campaigners boycott Premier League football matches

Fans find it boring. An activist has just run onto the pitch during a football match between Arsenal and Liverpool. Hang on to the goal post. The referee must interrupt the match. Congratulations when the activist left the field: he was finally able to start playing.

Two other Conservative Premier League games were cut short in the same week by activists linked to Just Stop Oil. The Wolves Football Club goalkeeper gets angry and yells at the boy.

Kay, a 20-year-old University of Manchester law student and activist, wears a T-shirt with a link that leads to a video. In this video, which was filmed just before he stormed the pitch, he says he’d rather not, but if we keep doing it, we’re risking everything. I want to believe that governments are doing what is best for us, but now they are not. They invest in oil and gas. They make the situation worse.

Lewis, a 21-year-old engineering student, managed to tape himself to a goal post the following day for Kai. “My generation is decimated – we have a livelihood crisis, a housing crisis, a fuel crisis, an unlivable planet – but we have a choice. We can choose to affirm that our climate is collapsing, we can choose to stand up to this government, and we can choose to act rather than watch.

When the promo hit RTL Nieuws, most of the reactions on Instagram read, “But her scarf is also made of oil!”
