Bertie Auld: football stars pay last tribute to Lisbon legend

STARS from the world of football and beyond have come together for the funeral of Lisbon Lions legend Bertie Auld, which takes place in Glasgow today.

Players past and present were pictured outside the gates of St Mary’s Church in Calton in Glasgow’s East End this afternoon attending the service with many familiar faces also captured by photographers at Celtic Park.

The service begins at noon in St Mary’s Church in Calton, in the town.

A procession will pass by Celtic Park and a final tribute will be paid to the Celtic Way before a private cremation by his family.

The former footballer died on November 14 at the age of 83. It was announced earlier this year that he was suffering from dementia.

Former Celtic managers Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers attended the funeral along with current gaffer Ange Postecoglou and deputy manager John Kennedy.

Other familiar faces included Lisbon Lions Jim Craig, John Hughes and John Clark, former goalkeeper Alan Rough, Celtic legend Danny McGrain as well as current Celtic team stars Anthony Ralston, Albian Ajeti, Boli Bolingoli and Kyogo Furuhashi.

Auld – a key member of Jock Stein’s 1967 European Cup winning team – had two stints at Parkhead as a player and racked up more than 150 appearances for the club.

Celtic players wore shorts with the number 10 in honor of Bertie Auld in Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup semi-final against St Johnstone.

A flood of tributes from Scottish football attested to Auld’s skills as a player and manager, and his character as a man.

Lord Willie Haughey spoke at the service alongside Jim Craig and Ian Cairns.
